The Maritime Standard Awards hits the High Notes

Back

Music and opera were the main themes of this year’s The Maritime Standard Awards, which were being held for the 11th time, in a show that was packed with high quality entertainment as well as a series of Awards presentations that recognised the contributions to the shipping and maritime sector made both by companies and individuals.

The event, which took place on Wednesday November 6th at The Atlantis on The Palm, Dubai, saw over 1000 guests packed into the iconic ballroom, where they were treated to some inspirational operatic singing by Bettina, as well by some high quality musical impressions, ranging from Lulu and Billie Holliday to Edith Piaf, by talented master of ceremonies, Debra Stephenson, who was well supported by co-host and local media personality, Rania Ali.

Once again, the TMS Awards were held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman Emirates Airline and Group, who has supported the event from the very beginning.

Opening proceedings TMS Managing Director, Trevor Pereira said, “The Awards are a time of celebration. A chance to celebrate the achievements of not just our industry, but of the growing stature of the region as a whole on the maritime stage.” He pointed out that many of the region’s success stories would be reflected in the Awards presented on the night.

The keynote speech was given by Abdullah Bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director of DP World GCC. He said, “This is a special occasion – an opportunity to remind ourselves of the role we play in supporting an industry that powers the global economy and keeps the world moving. Today we are celebrating our collective contribution to the shipping, ports and maritime sector and we are fortunate to have a rich maritime legacy in this region, and a national leadership with a strong vision for this sector.”

The evening witnessed the presentation of more than 30 different awards, covering different aspects of the shipping maritime industry, as well as special awards for individual achievement.

These included The Maritime Standard Woman in Shipping Award to Maria Kristina Javallena of Hafnia; the Editor’s Choice Award, to Drydocks World CEO, Capt. Rado Antolovic; the Excellence Award to Anders Østergaard of Monjasa; the Personality of the Year Award, to Sheikh Khaled Ahmed Al Sabah, CEO of Kuwait Oil Tanker Company; the Lifetime Achievement Award to Captain Amarjit Singh Kauchhur of IRI/The Marshall Islands Registry; the Hall of Fame Award for Transworld Group chairman, Ramesh Ramakrishnan; and the Legion of Honour Award to former DNV Vice President, Eivind Grostad. A special Deal of the Year Award was also presented to Noatum for its acquisition of Sese Logistics.

Reflecting on a night to be remembered, Trevor Pereira said, “Everyone was completely wowed by the opera singing and by Debra Stephenson’s performances, but they equally enjoyed the atmosphere, the networking and being able to celebrate achievement at the highest level. Every year we try and go bigger and better than before and we certainly achieved it this time!”
